    Thought this was a case aimed at desktop use of a Pi and wondered why the battery (and no provision for a USB integrated SSD), but when I went to the web site they showed it off being used for robots and drones, so is intended to be a nice way to package the Pi in those kind of Maker applications.

    There's people who own this, and people like me, who have their pi hanging from a cable at the shelf barebone, getting dusty, for 3 years now, doing it's job in the network, even is on the internet xD
    This is overengineering par excellance ... but okay, I can see why people buy this, but for 35$ you can get a 5 inch screen and with a 3d-printer a case for it...

    You made a Raspberry Pi Fan out of me.
    I was looking for a small box to take with me as some sort of "classic" game console to use as emulator and as a small "low end" PC. Seems to fit perfectly for this needs since all i need to emulate is GBA/GBC/N64 games, probably try even emulating PSX as it seems to be powerful enough. Much better value than any of these "mini" consoles of Sony or Nintendo. Not mentioned yet playing around with a Raspberry Pi which i wanted since ever but never saw any reason because of low performance and im not really a fan of linux.
    When i see this thing has also battery.... damn nice, all is missing now is a small screen for it to use it as regular computer on the go.

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx 3 года назад

      Is there any solution to use a SSD while its inside such a nice housing or is it better to go "mobile" with the data and use a fast USB 3 stick instead, which is also cheaper (and already there with my Sandisk Extreme Pro USB3.0 Sticks)? Transfer rates are pretty ok also over USB3 what i have seen.
      Wondering if the OS/platform is capable of bitstreaming DTS-HD and so over the HDMI port? If yes god damn the Pi4 is damn awesome and i absolutely NEED it. Could be even "better" than a subnotebook/netbook when using it with a display with built in battery which im anyways thinking to get one because sometimes i want on my notebook a second screen (on the go or even at home to be able to fast remove/add a 2nd screen from the table)

      As far as the stuff it comes with? Lessee... 4 click buttons, 2 each old-school, 5mm dome-top, red, yellow, green LEDs (think 1990s style), a sonic range sensor, a microphone (labeled “sound sensor, though it’s NOT an IMU), a tiny buzzer/speaker (like the old motherboard ones for boot beep diagnostics) and.... oh wait, that’s it. A piezo buzzer, a mic, a sonic range sensor, some buttons and a few dim, mono LEDs. I’d rather see stuff like M5Stack includes - Barometric pressure, temperature, humidity, volatile gas, etc sensors, color sensors, sonic along with radar, laser, etc range finders, and similar. The accessories they’re including would have been expected 20 years ago in a diy kit.... and promptly replaced with something more useful. RGBW LEDs. Capacitive touch sensors. NFC read/write devices. That sort of stuff.

    You know, I once loved RBPi, since that was a cheap, fanless mini PC. I used both the pi1 and pi2 as a media center. With these cases, it is not cheap and not fanless. Instead buying a Pi3, I bought an x86 for slightly more money with an SSD, USB3 and without fan (complete silence!). Now, Pi4 finally has USB3, but still, my old N4000 CPU is stronger, and while Pi has a good support, an x86 has better support.

      After reading... I don't think I like that concept much at all.
      Pi-Top intentionally used the physical dimensions of USB-C ports/cables, but doesn't follow the protocol.
      That just creates unnecessary confusion, and decreased compatibility. #NoThanks

Could you please test if one of those external touch monitors with usb C works with HDMI as input but also with the USB connected (just as a touch input device to the host PC). It would be awesome as a second monitor for a desktop setup having touch enabled. Thanks

    • @dimitristryfonos9680
      @dimitristryfonos9680 4 года назад

      I know a lot of laptops implement the touch (digitizer) function in a similar way. Also a lot of controller board for external monitors use edp for the display and usb for the digitizer and combine them both over a usc C port. Early android phones did this as well if my memory serves me well. Can't see why this wouldn't work but I also don't want to spend extra for a touch display that will end up as "just" a second monitor.

    If you have to disassemble the kit to insert the pi, why doesn't Pi-Top just supply DIY with the necessary components disassembled? They could probably knock more money off the DIY kit by not having those components pre-assembled, and it would be easier for a user to insert the pi, then assemble.
    Maybe I'm missing something?

    Just sounds like a gimmick rather then a solution and an expensive one at that.
    Not being able to access one of the USB ports and the second HDMI is also a deficiency.
    Once you add this to a PI it puts it into the price category that other competing products like the N2+ that would blow it away for performance.
    Pretty and the battery may have limited use but little else for me.
    £50 would be more realistic for what it is.

    Would this be a good option for making a portable pi4 handheld console? Could we add a Bluetooth controller and mini screen?

    i like you idea of a portable podcast player but i would love to see how if possible you could use the OLED to display the navigation of local music files.

    I don't know. I might consider that much for a Pi Case if it had a connection and place for an SSD. Then It might be OK. Also, their sensor suite for $80 is very expensive for what it is. Also, if your gonna do that much engineering, why not add full-size HDMI connectors?

    Just a correction, but the fan is an axial type not a centrifugal or "squirrel cage" type. A centrifugal fan would be an improvement over the axial due to the higher static pressure.

    • @ryandunwoody5076
      @ryandunwoody5076 4 года назад

      it's a centrifugel fan but you're right about the high static pressure, we needed to draw air from the battery compartment to cool it during fast charging which required high pressure

    Really cool video. Do they make a version compatible with older Pi boards like a 3B+? I know there's an obvious performance downgrade, but it would be a nice for us Pi obsessives to get more use out of our ever growing Pi collection.

    Was there something wrong with the screen?It was flashing a lot.Or was that just because of the camera recording it?

    • @DoryanTheCritic
      @DoryanTheCritic 4 года назад

      Yes, the naked human eye won't be able to perceive it, just the camera recording it.

    I assume if it's connected to a power supply, and you lose power to your house, the battery would function like a UPS, giving you the chance to safely power down the Pi4?

    Indeed, $299 was ridiculous. Even $99 is too much. A better price would be like $60-80 USD, and even at that price I still can't really fully justify it.

      After all I've commented, I think I will end up purchasing this once it releases, mainly due to the screen and keyboard that are also going to be launched.

    Hi EtaPrime, thanks for the video. About a year ago I modified my arcade1up watching your videos. I was using a pc but ended up being a hassle to config and open games. What do you recommend me to use for a easy turn on and play games on the arcade? Thanks

    I have been torn between two cases since buying my RPi48GB. I wish, the Argone and Pi Top cases would get together. The PiTop has everything I want minus the one additional thing that Argone provides. A connector / module for M.2 SSD. I've looked at every possible option for setting up the pi with SSD and to date, this is my favorite implementation. PiTop only needs to add SSD and it would be complete. Argone, is missing everything else that PiTop provides.... Sad, sad, sad...
